uPVC Door Lock Repair

uPVC doors are the standard choice across Cambridge — from terraced houses off Mill Road to modern flats near the station and Victorian conversions throughout Chesterton itself. Their multipoint locking mechanisms are engineered to hold a door securely at three, five or even seven points along the frame, but that complexity comes with a trade-off: when a gearbox wears out, a hook bolt snaps, or a spindle breaks, the whole door can be left unable to lock at all. That is not a situation anyone wants to leave overnight.

Frequently asked questions

My uPVC door handle lifts but the door will not lock — what has gone wrong?

This is almost always a failed gearbox. The handle is transferring movement into the mechanism but the internal cams, hook bolts or shoot bolts are no longer responding — either because a component has sheared, the gearbox has seized, or the spindle connecting the handle to the mechanism has snapped. It is worth checking whether the door is correctly aligned in the frame first, as a dropped door can prevent the hooks from reaching the keeps even when the mechanism itself is intact. Either way, this is a job for a trained technician: a gearbox on a multipoint lock is not straightforward to replace without the right tools and a stock of compatible parts. Call us on 01223 912859 and we will assess the fault and give you an exact price before starting work.

Can you repair a sliding patio door lock, or does the whole mechanism need replacing?

It depends on what has failed. Sliding patio doors use a different multipoint arrangement to hinged doors, and sliding door lock replacement is one of the more common jobs we carry out in Cambridge. If the fault is an isolated broken shoot bolt or a worn roller, targeted repair is sometimes possible. If the gearbox itself has failed or the mechanism is significantly corroded, full replacement is the more reliable outcome. We carry a range of sliding door mechanism stock and can usually complete the work in a single visit. Factors such as the age of the door, the brand of mechanism and the parts required will all be reflected in the quote we give you before any work starts.

How much does uPVC door lock repair cost?

We do not quote figures upfront on this page because the cost of any repair or replacement depends on several specific factors: the nature of the fault, the parts required (gearbox, cylinder, hook bolts, keeps or a combination), the time of day, your location within the Cambridge area and the travel involved. What we always do is confirm an exact price with you on the phone before anyone sets off. There are no hidden charges added afterwards. The call-out charge is included in that confirmed figure.

My euro cylinder has snapped — is my door still secure?

A snapped euro cylinder is a serious security concern and should be treated urgently. When the outer section of a cylinder snaps away — which can happen through wear, a failed break-in attempt, or even accidental force — the internal cam that operates the gearbox can become accessible. This is precisely the vulnerability that anti-snap cylinders are designed to prevent. If your cylinder has snapped, do not leave the door unattended. Call us on 01223 912859 and we will attend as quickly as possible, open the door if needed, and fit a TS007 3-star anti-snap replacement cylinder as part of the same visit. We recommend anti-snap cylinders on all uPVC front doors in Cambridge as standard practice, particularly where insurance policies specify a minimum security level.

I am a tenant — can you carry out repairs without my landlord being present?

Yes, in most cases. We carry out uPVC lock repairs for tenants across Cambridge regularly. We will verify your occupancy of the property as part of our standard practice before beginning any work, which protects everyone involved. If your landlord or letting agent needs to be informed or needs a written record of the work carried out, we can provide that. If the repair is urgent — for example the door will not lock overnight — we can proceed and document the work so you can recover the cost from your landlord where appropriate. We are happy to speak directly with managing agents or housing associations if that is more straightforward.

Do you work on uPVC doors outside normal business hours in Cambridge?

Yes. We operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays. A broken multipoint mechanism on a cold Cambridge evening is exactly the kind of situation we exist to resolve. We send a technician straight away when you call and are usually with you in around 30 minutes, though we cannot guarantee an exact arrival time. The price is always confirmed with you before we set off, so there are no surprises regardless of the time you call.
