When you are standing on your doorstep in the rain, or you have come home late after a long shift and your key will not turn, the question you are really asking is: can a locksmith get me in without wrecking my door? The honest answer is — usually yes, but not always, and it depends entirely on what lock you have. This article sets out exactly how a skilled locksmith approaches different types of locks, what can be opened non-destructively, and when drilling is the only safe option.

At Chesterton Locksmith, we work across Cambridge and the surrounding area every day — from Victorian terraces off Mill Road to modern flats near the station and uPVC-fronted homes out towards Histon and Bar Hill. We get asked some version of this question on almost every call-out, so here is a genuinely straight answer, written for homeowners who want to understand what is happening on their own front door.

Frequently asked questions

Can a locksmith open any lock without drilling?+

Not every lock. Standard Yale-type nightlatches, 5-lever mortice deadlocks in good condition, and undamaged euro cylinders on uPVC doors can usually be opened non-destructively by an experienced locksmith using specialist manipulation tools. High-security cylinders rated to TS007 3-star, anti-pick and anti-drill cylinders, and locks that have already been damaged or seized are specifically designed to resist this — and in those cases, drilling the cylinder is the only safe option. The cylinder is then replaced immediately, leaving your door fully secure.

How much does an emergency locksmith cost in Cambridge?+

There is no single figure because the final quote depends on several factors: the type of lock involved, whether the door needs destructive or non-destructive entry, what parts are required (a standard cylinder versus an anti-snap TS007-rated one, for example), the time of day, and your location within the Cambridge area. Evening, weekend, and bank holiday call-outs are priced differently from daytime work. What we always do is confirm an exact price with you on the phone before anyone travels to your address — so you know the full cost before you agree to anything.

Is it safe to call a locksmith when I am locked out — how do I know they are legitimate?+

A trustworthy locksmith will always ask you to verify that you are the occupant or owner before beginning any work — usually by asking for identification, a tenancy agreement, or similar proof. They will also confirm a price before starting. When you call 01223 912859, we confirm the address, the door type, and the price up front, and we will ask for reasonable proof of occupancy when we arrive. We are fully insured and experienced — if anything about a locksmith's approach makes you uncomfortable, that is a reasonable signal to pause and ask questions before work begins.

My uPVC door will not open even though I have the key — is that a lock problem?+

Not necessarily. uPVC doors use a multipoint locking mechanism with a gearbox that can seize, wear out, or fail independently of the cylinder. If the door has also dropped on its hinges, the locking points may be misaligned with the keeps in the frame, making the door impossible to open or close properly even with the correct key. This is a mechanical fault rather than a lockout, and it calls for uPVC door lock repair rather than simply picking the cylinder. We carry common gearbox and handle parts on the van, so most of these faults can be diagnosed and fixed in a single visit.
